Jamie Dobie: What I’d tell my younger self
Scottish Rugby player Jamie Dobie is by all accounts a role model for many. He signed for Glasgow Warriors straight from school and has since featured in nearly 70 professional games for the Scotstoun side and made his Scotland debut in the 2021 Autumn Nations Series win over Tonga at BT Murray field.
Away from the pitch, That Guy spoke with Jamie to have a chat about the people who influenced him growing up, the important of healthy relationships and what it means to be a positive role model for others.
If you could go back and have a conversation with your teenage self, what advice would you give about relationships and respecting women?
I would tell my teenage self that healthy and strong relationships are built on foundations of trust, communication and equality. You are able to develop your relationship at your own pace, opposed to the pace of those around you or what you think should be happening – don’t let your friends decide how you treat your partner.
Who were your role models growing up? How did they positively influence your behaviour towards women?
I had the benefit of many strong role models growing up, both men and women who showed me through their actions what it means to be kind and respectful to one another. Firstly, my parents taught me from an early age about what doing right from wrong looks like and treating those around you with kindness. Throughout my time at school, I had several teachers who reinforced what healthy relationships looked like and spoke positively about their own relationships and how your treatment of women is a reflection of your character as a whole.
What does being a decent role model mean to you?
Being a decent role model to me means being a reference point for those who look up to you when they are making decisions and asking themselves the question: what would he do? If I am the positive and decent role model which I aspire to be, then people will make the right decision based on kindness and how you will make other people feel.
Thanks, Jamie.
You are a role model. Be a decent one.
Your actions set the standard for others. Stop sexual violence before it starts.
